How To Fix A Roof Yourself
Having a leaky roof can prove to be a very messy situation during rainy seasons. Worse yet, you even have a clue that your roof is damaged until you start spotting drops of water coming from strange places within your home. Leaks are typically caused by missing or cracked shingles. Now what, how do you fix a roof? Ignoring a small drip from your roof can lead to further damage to the roof in its entirety and eventually will lead to damage inside the house. The longer you let the water come in contact with the damaged area the more repairs there will be. However if the weather outside is not suitable for roof inspections it is recommended you wait for the weather to clear up. As a temporary solution clear the leaky area within your home of any furniture that may get water damaged. And next place a container directly under the leak to catch the drops of water. This will work fine for a small leak but if you are dealing with a graver situation such as one that can virtually flood your house in short notice you may want to consider covering the roof until repairs can be made. Determine the area of the leak on your roof and cover it with a tarp or thick plastic sheeting secured on its ends with nailed down strips of wood. It is always worth mentioning some precautionary tips when fixing a roof, as this may just save you from serious injury. Make sure to schedule your roof patch up during a sunny day as it is extremely dangerous to be on a wet and slippery roof. And make sure to wear rubber soled shoes for better traction. The first thing you will have to do is to find the source of the leak. Once you are certain the problem lies on the roof you may now assess the work at hand. Make sure you are confident in your ability to climb up a ladder and fixing a roof yourself before attempting. If not it will be best to call a professional roofer and let him handle the work. With all those things said here are few simple steps on how to fix a roof if you choose that route: After finding the source of the leak, see if there are any missing or damaged shingles. If this is the case you may want to first check and see if you have leftover shingles from the previous roof installation. Buying a bundle is another option if you have no available replacement. You do not need to worry about finding a perfect match; you can just choose the closest match because the shingles color will fade in time. Before starting to work on the roof be sure to have a safety harness on and somebody on guard in case of an emergency. What you will need are the following: a flat pry bar, hammer, roofing nails, roofing sealant, and matching shingles. With all things in place, slip the flat pry bar under the broken shingle to lift it up and expose the heads of the roofing nails. Remove the shingles after prying the nails out. Then slide the new shingles into place. Make sure though that they are in line with the shingles on either side. |
