Determine the area of the leak on your roof and cover it with a tarp or thick plastic sheeting secured on its ends with nailed down strips of wood.

Make sure to schedule your roof patch up during a sunny day as it is extremely dangerous to be on a wet and slippery roof. And make sure to wear rubber soled shoes for better traction. The first thing you will have to do is to find the source of the leak. Once you are certain the problem lies on the roof you may now assess the work at hand. Make sure you are confident in your ability to climb up a ladder and fixing a roof yourself before attempting. If not it will be best to call a professional roofer and let him handle the work.

Before starting to work on the roof be sure to have a safety harness on and somebody on guard in case of an emergency. What you will need are the following: a flat pry bar, hammer, roofing nails, roofing sealant, and matching shingles. With all things in place, slip the flat pry bar under the broken shingle to lift it up and expose the heads of the roofing nails. Remove the shingles after prying the nails out. Then slide the new shingles into place. Make sure though that they are in line with the shingles on either side.
